HAY SPRINGS, NE — A 49-year-old woman from Hay Springs is facing multiple charges after authorities tracked a vehicle reported stolen in Colorado to a bar in Sheridan County.

Shannon Barron was arrested on July 12 and charged with two felonies: possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. She also faces three misdemeanor charges: resisting arrest, refusing a chemical test, and driving under the influence.

According to court documents, the Englewood Police Department in Colorado alerted Sheridan County officials about a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek rented through the car-sharing app Turo that had not been returned. Working with the vehicle’s owner, police tracked the car as it traveled through Chadron, Nebraska.

Deputies located the vehicle outside the Outlaw Bar and Saloon in Hay Springs. When they attempted to arrest Barron, she allegedly resisted and ignored commands. A Taser was used during the arrest.

Officers said Barron appeared to be under the influence. A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded handgun, a 3¾-inch switchblade, marijuana, two syringes with meth residue, and an open container of Fireball whiskey.

Due to previous felony convictions, Barron is prohibited from possessing firearms. She was also reportedly uncooperative at Chadron Community Hospital, refusing to submit to blood alcohol testing after being treated for a head injury sustained during the arrest.

While Barron was originally arrested for theft of the vehicle, prosecutors did not file a theft charge.

She is scheduled to appear in court again on August 21.
