BUCKHANNON — Shane Eric Currence, 44, of Mill Creek, is in custody after a routine traffic stop uncovered a loaded handgun in his vehicle and revealed his suspended driver’s license.
On Sunday afternoon around 2:22 p.m., Patrolman Cole Bender of the Buckhannon Police Department spotted a white 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander driving near Cleveland Avenue on Fifth Street. The officer recognized the driver as Currence, who was stopped the day before, and later confirmed his license was suspended due to unpaid citations.
The officer conducted a traffic stop in the Goodwill parking lot and asked Currence to exit the vehicle. When questioned about illegal items, Currence reportedly responded, “she might have something in there I don’t know,” and added, “there could be a weapon in there.”
After consenting to a vehicle search, officers discovered a loaded SCCY 9mm handgun tucked between the driver’s seat and center console.
Currence now faces two felony charges of prohibited person concealing a firearm and a misdemeanor for driving while his license was suspended for the third time. He is currently held at Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $31,500 bond.
Records also show Currence has a prior conviction for delivery of a controlled substance in 2012, as well as previous convictions for driving with a suspended license in 2004 and 2017.
