KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Seven men have been charged in connection with a series of high-profile burglaries that targeted professional athletes across the United States. The men, all Chilean nationals, allegedly stole over $2 million in goods from NBA and NFL players, including Kansas City Chiefs stars Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.
According to a federal complaint unsealed on Tuesday, the burglary spree began in October 2024. The thefts took place while the athletes were competing in games, leaving their homes vulnerable to break-ins. The stolen items included watches, jewelry, designer bags, and cash. Among the victims were players from the Milwaukee Bucks, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Chiefs.
The federal complaint names the suspects as Pablo Zuniga Cartes, Ignacio Zuniga Cartes, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, Bastian Orellano Morales, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, and Sergio Ortega Cabello. Ranging in age from 23 to 38, the men face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
In one case, Kelce’s home was targeted on October 7 while he was playing against the New Orleans Saints. Officials reported that $20,000 in cash was stolen from his $6 million residence. Mahomes’s home was also burglarized in early October.
The group was also allegedly involved in the November burglary of a Milwaukee Bucks player’s home. The stolen items from that incident were valued at more than $1.5 million, including a safe containing valuables and a designer suitcase.
Security experts have pointed out that athletes are particularly vulnerable to such crimes due to their valuable possessions and public schedules. In response, the NFL had warned players about organized theft groups, urging them to take extra precautions with their personal security.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to bring the alleged thieves to justice while NFL and NBA players remain cautious about their safety.
