A six-member gang, including a 15-year-old boy, was arrested by the police for allegedly breaking into a house near the Salem-Cochin National Highway in Kanjikovil, Perundurai, and stealing valuables worth thousands.
The accused have been identified as Selva (24), Ramesh (24), Sakthivel (29), Siranjeevi (37), M. Kumar (26)—all from Thoraipakkam, Chennai—and a juvenile.
The incident occurred on April 10, when Rajendran (60), a retired court staff, left his Mullampatti home with his family to visit his son in Chennai. The next day, alert neighbors noticed the back door on the first floor was ajar and informed Rajendran.
Upon returning, Rajendran discovered that Rs 26,000 in cash, three watches, and a mobile phone had been stolen. He immediately lodged a complaint with the Kanjikovil police.
During the investigation, police traced the stolen mobile phone, which had become active with a new SIM card. This crucial lead led them straight to the suspects, who were arrested on Saturday.
According to investigators, the gang had been en route to a private yoga center in Coimbatore. They stopped at Mullampatti to rest, where they noticed Rajendran’s locked house. Climbing through a rear pipe, they broke in through the back door.
Police stated that several of the accused have prior criminal records in Chennai. Further inquiries are ongoing to identify any additional crimes linked to the gang.
