In a successful crackdown, police in Cachar district arrested Selim Uddin Barbhuiya for carrying counterfeit currency worth Rs 63,000. The Sonai police intercepted an autorickshaw driven by the accused near Kajidahar on the Silchar-Aizawl NH-306 on Wednesday evening.

Acting on a tip-off, officers set a trap targeting Barbhuiya, who was allegedly transporting fake currency intended for delivery at the Inter-State Bus Terminal in Silchar. A search revealed 126 counterfeit Rs 500 notes, totaling Rs 63,000, along with a high-end smartphone, a SIM card, and a black plastic bag. The autorickshaw involved was also seized.

SP Cachar, Numal Mahatta, praised the operation’s success and assured strict action against those circulating fake currency. Investigations are ongoing to dismantle the broader counterfeit currency network, aiming to safeguard the local economy and public trust.
