Selim Mondal, a 30-year-old resident of Sagarpara, Murshidabad, West Bengal, was arrested by police in Perumbavoor on Friday after 17 counterfeit currency notes were found in his possession. Mondal, who was already involved in several theft cases, was initially intercepted while the police were investigating a mobile phone theft case in Alappuzha.
While probing the theft, the police tracked a stolen phone that was turned on in Perumbavoor, leading them to Mondal’s residence in Mavinchuvad, where they found multiple stolen mobile phones. During the search, they also discovered the counterfeit currency, which was of high quality, featuring watermarks and security threads, making it difficult to detect.
Mondal claimed that he had received the fake currency notes after selling a stolen mobile phone in Murshidabad. The police are now investigating whether the counterfeit money originated from outside India and if it had been used for any transactions.
The police have officially arrested Mondal, and he is set to be presented before the court on Saturday. The case details have been shared with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Anti-Terrorist Squad, and other intelligence agencies for further investigation.
