The main accused in the murder of Akali Dal’s former sarpanch Parwinder Singh was arrested at Chennai International Airport on July 20, while trying to board a flight to Malaysia, police confirmed on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Sehajpal alias Shubham, had been on the run since July 7 after allegedly shooting dead Parwinder Singh and his neighbour in Shiva Colony, Rajasansi, following a long-standing neighborhood dispute.
Rajasansi Station House Officer (SHO) Mantej Singh stated that a Lookout Circular (LOC) had been issued against Sehajpal. Immigration authorities at Chennai airport flagged and detained him, subsequently notifying the Amritsar Rural Police. A police team was immediately dispatched to take him into custody.
According to SHO Singh, two pistols have been recovered during the investigation — one of them allegedly used in the murder and another licensed firearm. Both weapons were found in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district after interrogation of the accused.
The fatal incident unfolded on the night of July 7 during an altercation between the two families, reportedly triggered by a dispute over a ladder placed outside a house — an extension of their ongoing parking-related tensions.
As the argument escalated, Sehajpal allegedly drew a revolver and fired seven shots. Three bullets struck Parwinder Singh, killing him instantly.
Police had earlier arrested Sehajpal’s wife, Kirandeep Kaur, on July 9 in connection with the case. Investigations are ongoing.
