COUVA, TRINIDAD — A security guard is among three men arrested in connection with an attempted robbery at AmcoWeld Engineering Ltd on Camden Road late Monday night, where thieves tried to make off with $90,000 worth of copper cable.
According to the Couva Criminal Investigations Department (CID), officers responded to a report of suspicious activity at the facility around 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a 25-year-old security guard—employed by Tamim Security Firm—lying on the floor in handcuffs.
The guard, who resides in East California, initially told police he had been ambushed by three armed men around 10 p.m., who restrained him and held him at gunpoint. He claimed the men brought in a white Kia H-100 truck and began loading the facility’s heavy-duty copper cables onto it.
However, the suspects fled the scene when police arrived, abandoning the truck and the stolen materials.
Police arrested two men shortly after the incident: a 24-year-old from SumSum Hill, Claxton Bay, and a 25-year-old from Junon Street East, California. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the security guard had conspired with the suspects, and he was also arrested.
The owner of AmcoWeld Engineering Ltd later verified the estimated value of the stolen copper cables.
The investigation remains ongoing.
