Sundargarh (Odisha): Two repeat offenders from Uttar Pradesh were arrested by the Town Police in Sundargarh district on Saturday night for duping a local woman by swapping her ATM card.
The accused, Savaj Ali (34) and Azhadar Hussain (28), both residents of Shamli district, had earlier been arrested in a similar fraud case by Jharsuguda police. They were apprehended again shortly after being released on bail.
The latest incident occurred on August 9, when Jayanti Toppo (45), a hostel matron at Kulamani High School, visited an ATM kiosk to check her balance. One of the fraudsters, posing as a helpful bystander, tricked her and swapped her ATM card. Within minutes, Toppo received multiple transaction alerts — Rs40,000 had been withdrawn from a different ATM.
Acting swiftly on her complaint, police analyzed CCTV footage and tracked down the suspects. During interrogation, the duo confessed to the crime. They also admitted to committing a similar fraud in Rajgangpur. Both were remanded to judicial custody.
Police officials said further investigation is ongoing to determine if they were part of a larger interstate fraud racket.
