Mohali police on Monday arrested two men in connection with the brutal death of a 28-year-old migrant labourer, Senki, at a dera in Miyanpur Changar village, Majri block. The victim, originally from Madhya Pradesh, had recently moved to Punjab with his wife and five children to work at a local brick kiln.
The accused were identified as Saudagar Singh, a resident of Morinda, and Inderjit Singh of Baroli village in Kharar. Police apprehended both men from the dera itself, where the incident occurred.
According to the FIR filed on the basis of a complaint by Senki’s wife, Pinky, the assault occurred on the night of July 20. She said her husband had gone out after dinner to buy household items from the village but never returned. A search began that night, but Senki was not found until the following evening.
At around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, the dera manager informed Pinky that a man had been caught naked near the Baba’s grave. Pinky rushed to the location and found her husband lying severely injured near the dera’s langar area. His vest was torn, and he was clearly beaten.
In what became his dying declaration, Senki reportedly told Pinky that he had stopped at the dera to drink water on his way back from visiting his brother in Khijrabad village. Two Nihangs confronted him, accused him of being intoxicated, and began assaulting him. Despite his pleas of innocence, they beat and detained him through the night.
Pinky alleged that when she tried to intervene, both Saudagar and Inderjit assaulted her and chased her away. The next morning, she returned with other labourers, only to find Senki in critical condition. Despite attempts to revive him, he died on the spot.
Senki and Pinky had been in Punjab for barely 10–12 days. They lived in a nearby slum with their five children: Mansi (11), Chadni (10), Mai (6), Pari (4), and Aju (2).
