Two more individuals have been arrested in connection with the human trafficking case in West Bengal’s Nadia district, police confirmed on Wednesday, as investigations into an alleged sex racket continue to widen.
The accused were arrested from a café in Kalyani on Tuesday. They have been identified as Sathi Biswas, also known as Tina, and Tanmoy Das. According to sources at the Kolkata Police headquarters, the duo was taken into custody based on leads obtained during the interrogation of previously arrested suspects.
With these arrests, the total number of people held in the case has increased to eight. Police officials also revealed that during the investigation, information emerged regarding the involvement of two brothel owners linked to the trafficking network.
Investigators are expected to seek custody of Sathi Biswas and Tanmoy Das from Kalyani to further question them and determine whether more individuals are connected to the trafficking gang.
The case traces back to September last year, when the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Kolkata Police rescued 11 people, including nine minor girls, during a raid in the Burtolla Police Station area of north Kolkata. The operation was carried out following a tip-off about a suspected sex racket being run from a residential property.
The house, owned by a middle-aged couple, led to the immediate arrest of Amit Banerjee and his wife Saraswati Banerjee. Subsequently, four more accused—Suman Halder, Deep Chatterjee, Akash Chowdhury, and Pooja Mistry—were also taken into custody on suspicion of trafficking activities.
Police officials noted that complaints related to sex rackets operating from spas and massage parlours have surfaced intermittently across Kolkata and its adjoining regions over the years. To counter such crimes, law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance and conducted frequent raids to dismantle trafficking networks.
Authorities stated that the investigation remains ongoing and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
