Saroj Thorat Held in Rs8 Cr Job Scam Across 5 States

Director of Eagle Expert Consultancy arrested by CID

by Ananya Mehta

The Telangana CID has arrested Saroj Shiswant Thorat, also known as Saroj Bharath Kumar, for her alleged role in a large-scale overseas job scam involving fake promises of employment in Malta. Thorat is the director of Eagle Expert Immigration Consultancy, which is at the center of the investigation.

The scam was uncovered after a Karimnagar resident, Ch Kamalakar, filed a complaint alleging that he and his friend, K Sunil, were defrauded of Rs8 lakh by a consultancy named “Abroad Study Plan Overseas Educational Consultancy,” based in KPHB, Hyderabad. They were promised guaranteed jobs in Malta but received fake documents and no actual job placements.

This complaint, along with two others, led to a formal case under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code — including 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 467 (forgery) — and the Emigration Act, 1983. The case was later handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Telangana CID.

Investigations revealed that this was part of a broader conspiracy involving multiple accused — including Ghanta Anil Kumar, Ghanta Sunil Kumar, Kottu Sai Ravi Teja, Kottu Sai Manoj, Shubham, and Vamshi — who operated from Hyderabad, Vijayawada, and Delhi. Nearly 100 victims from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and other states were allegedly duped.

Each victim reportedly paid around Rs5 lakh, lured by the promise of overseas jobs, only to discover upon reaching Malta that no arrangements had been made. Many were forced to return to India, suffering severe financial losses.

On June 17, 2025, Saroj Thorat became the eighth accused to be arrested. She was taken into custody in Hyderabad and has been remanded to judicial custody. Authorities confirmed she conspired with her husband, Vuyyuru Bharath Kumar — also a director of Eagle Expert — and the directors of Abroad Study Plan to orchestrate the scam.

Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining absconding suspects.
