PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (WPEC) — A 28-year-old woman accused of exploiting an elderly victim for financial gain has been arrested in Port St. Lucie after a fraud investigation.
Authorities say Sarah Works gained the trust of an elderly victim by posing as a caregiver, allowing her to access financial resources and personal identification. However, neighbors told CBS12 News that caregiving was not her actual job.
The investigation began when a family member noticed suspicious activity in the victim’s bank account and alerted law enforcement. On Wednesday morning, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO), alongside the SWAT team, executed a search warrant at 210 Banyan Drive, where Works was residing. She was taken into custody without incident.
Works now faces charges for scheme to defraud, fraudulent use of credit cards, and criminal use of personal identification. She is being held without bond at the St. Lucie County Jail.
Prior Arrests & Additional Charges
This is not Works’ first run-in with the law:
February 16, 2025: Arrested for grand theft of a motor vehicle and exploitation of an elderly person after hospital staff alerted authorities about fraudulent Power of Attorney documents she allegedly had the victim sign.
January 30, 2025: Arrested for battery, accused of attacking multiple Dave & Buster’s employees and punching an officer after being asked to leave.
Sheriff Richard Del Toro emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable citizens, stating, “Fraud and elder abuse betray the trust of our most vulnerable citizens. We will continue to take a strong stance against those who exploit and harm others for personal gain.”
