In a surprising case of deception and theft, a 63-year-old man was arrested in Srirangam on Monday for allegedly stealing gold jewellery from a priest’s home.

The accused, S Santhana Gopal, a Chennai native currently working as a cook in Trichy, visited the residence of R Srinivasan, a 35-year-old priest, on VOC Street to invite him to a housewarming ceremony.

During the visit, Gopal claimed to have experienced a wardrobe malfunction and requested privacy to change clothes. Believing his story, Srinivasan and his family allowed him into their bedroom.

Shortly after Gopal exited the room, Srinivasan noticed a gold chain worth Rs1.8 lakh missing from the locker. Suspicious, he immediately confronted Gopal, discovering the stolen chain in his possession.

With the help of a neighbor, Srinivasan handed the accused over to the Srirangam police, who registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 305 (Theft). Gopal was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
