What initially appeared to be a mysterious killing of an unidentified man on a rural Sangrur pathway turned out to be a fatal dispute among habitual thieves, police said. The Sangrur district police cracked the blind murder case in just five days, arresting two suspects.
The case surfaced on the morning of January 11, when villagers reported a motionless man on a path leading to agricultural fields in the Sadar Dhuri police station area. The victim had suffered severe head injuries and was bleeding from the mouth. With no identification and no witnesses, investigators faced a classic blind murder challenge.
An FIR (No. 15, dated Jan 11, 2026) was registered under Sections 103 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against unknown persons. Multiple police teams were deployed under SSP Sangrur Sartaj Singh Chahal.
The breakthrough came not from the murder site, but during routine night patrolling. On January 15, a police party intercepted two suspicious men near Babbanpur village bus stand. The recovery of stolen cable wires and a knife led to their arrest in a separate theft case. The accused, Lakhanhira and Bihari Saw, both from Ludhiana, soon revealed the identity of the deceased.
During interrogation, the duo confessed that the victim was their associate, Subhash Kumar, a migrant from Uttar Pradesh. The three were habitual thieves who had traveled to Dhuri on January 10 to steal cable wires from agricultural pump sets.
Police said the murder was not premeditated. After committing theft in Rajomajra village, the trio consumed liquor, leading to a heated argument over the division of stolen cable wires. In a moment of rage, Lakhanhira and Bihari Saw allegedly struck Subhash Kumar on the head with an iron pipe, causing fatal injuries.
The accused abandoned the body and weapon on a secluded pathway, believing the victim would remain unidentified. On January 16, both were formally arrested in connection with the murder. SSP Sartaj Singh Chahal stated that the accused would be presented in court and remanded to assist in recovering the weapon and tracing their criminal network.
