by Sophia Bennett

CANTON, OH — A 26-year-old Canton man, Samuel Shank, has been sentenced to 29 years to life in prison after being convicted of murder, felonious assault, and abduction in connection with a deadly bar shooting earlier this year.

The incident occurred on March 24 at around 11:46 p.m. during a fight at Old Landmark Tavern on Ridge Ave. SE. According to the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office, Shank pulled a gun during the altercation and shot 75-year-old Phillip Lee Harris twice—once in the chest and once in the abdomen.

Harris was rushed to the hospital but later pronounced dead.

After the shooting, Shank reportedly held other patrons at gunpoint, preventing them from leaving the tavern.

Stark County deputies arrested Shank at the scene. He was later convicted and sentenced on Friday.
