Samuel Patrick Groft, a resident of Los Angeles, has been arrested for allegedly using a chainsaw to cut down trees in various parts of the city. The 39-year-old faces felony vandalism charges after the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested him on April 22. Groft was taken into custody at approximately 4:30 p.m. when Rampart Detectives found him near Custer Avenue and West Sunset Boulevard. His bail has been set at $150,000.
The arrest follows a series of tree-cutting incidents across downtown Los Angeles, the Westlake District, and Glassell Park, where Groft is accused of damaging at least 11 trees between April 17 and 22. The LAPD issued a community alert urging residents not to approach the suspect, and detectives linked Groft to the damage through evidence collected during their investigation.
During a press conference, LAPD Commander Lilian Carranza expressed shock over the incidents, especially given the proximity to Earth Day. The damage to at least eight of the trees is estimated to cost $347,000, according to KNBC. Carranza noted, “We know the who. The why will be part of the investigation.”
The authorities have released Groft’s booking photo in the hope of identifying other potential victims. City officials have also reacted strongly to the vandalism. Mayor Karen Bass called the incident “truly beyond comprehension,” and promised that public works crews would assess the damage and quickly replace the damaged trees.
City Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado introduced a motion to increase fines for anyone who injures or cuts down city trees. The motion will be presented to the public works and public safety committees for review.
As the investigation continues, police remain focused on determining Groft’s motives for the tree-cutting spree.
