A Montreal-area man has been sentenced to a historic 25 years in prison after sexually assaulting several women he met on online dating platforms, including Tinder. Samuel Moderie, 28, was sentenced on Wednesday at the Montreal courthouse, where the judge also placed him on the sex offender registry for life and classified him as a long-term offender, subjecting him to 10 years of surveillance following his release.
Moderie was arrested in 2023 after 13 victims came forward, many of whom had met him on dating apps. He was charged with over 40 offences and pleaded guilty to 24 sex-related charges last fall. The assaults occurred between July 2022 and January 2023, during which Moderie filmed the abuse.
Justice Pierre Dupras noted several aggravating factors, such as the number of victims, the duration of the crimes, and the lack of regard for the safety of the victims, some of whom had children. The 25-year sentence was the one requested by the Crown during the sentencing hearing in October, while Moderie had sought a reduced 15-year term.
This sentence marks a significant legal outcome, emphasizing the serious consequences for those who exploit online dating platforms to commit violent crimes.
