HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WSPA) – A man from Greenwood, South Carolina, is in custody after authorities in North Carolina connected him to stolen vehicles and fraud across multiple states.
Sammy Clayton Weaghington, 57, was arrested Tuesday after returning to Henderson County, where he had been under investigation since 2024. The investigation began when deputies discovered he had purchased a trailer using a closed bank account. Warrants were issued at the time, but Weaghington fled the area before law enforcement could locate him.
Upon his return, deputies took him into custody and discovered he was in possession of a stolen trailer from Rhode Island. A search of his property revealed additional stolen items, including a camper and two vehicles that had been reported missing by law enforcement agencies in Tennessee.
The original trailer tied to the fraudulent purchase was not found, and officials believe it may have been sold out of state.
Weaghington is charged in North Carolina with:
Felony obtaining property by false pretense
Felony worthless check
In addition to the North Carolina charges, Weaghington is also facing extradition due to outstanding warrants from two agencies in Tennessee and four in South Carolina. Authorities continue to investigate the broader scope of his alleged interstate theft activities.
