ALBANY, NY — Sakir Akkan, 21, has pleaded guilty to raping a 15-year-old runaway girl in Albany, court documents confirm. The incident occurred last year in the backseat of Akkan’s Toyota Prius, where he assaulted the girl while armed with a metal pipe.
Akkan, identified as a Turkish asylum seeker who entered the U.S. via the southern border, was apprehended after a traffic stop in Troy on June 6. Albany detectives had used security footage and license plate readers to gather evidence linking Akkan to the assault. The teenage victim later identified him in a photo lineup more than two weeks after the incident.
He is expected to be sentenced to six months in jail and 10 years of probation, with formal sentencing scheduled for July.
This case has drawn attention due to both the nature of the crime and Akkan’s immigration status.
