A man from Sector 55 in Faridabad lost over Rs16 lakh in an elaborate investment fraud after being lured by a person posing as a woman IT professional on a social media platform.
Police confirmed on Saturday that six cybercriminals, including Sahil Khan, Laxman, Rajesh Ojha, Rahul, Surya Prakash Maru, and Hasan Khan, were arrested in connection with the case. All six are under five-day police remand for interrogation.
According to the FIR registered at the Cyber Police Station, NIT Faridabad, the fraud began when the victim developed an online friendship with someone he believed to be a woman working at a tech company in Mumbai. The individual convinced him to invest money using a fake trading app.
Initially, the man saw returns, but when he tried to withdraw his money, the fraudsters cited problems such as “profit charges,” “low credit score,” and “account freeze risks.” Over time, he was defrauded of Rs16,35,886.
Investigations led to the arrest of the six accused, who are believed to be part of a wider cyber fraud network. Police said the suspects had been using similar tactics on other victims and further probes are underway.
Citizens are urged to remain cautious when approached online for financial investments and to verify credentials before transferring any funds.
