Thane district police have arrested 44-year-old Sahid Akthar Abdul Hanif Ansari, a resident of Malegaon, Nashik, for possessing counterfeit currency worth Rs 54,000. The arrest was made during a routine patrol near Gaibi Nagar in Bhiwandi on Monday, police officials confirmed.

Upon interrogation, Ansari admitted he had procured the forged notes from another Malegaon resident. Authorities have registered a case under Section 180 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to the possession of counterfeit currency, and launched a manhunt for the supplier.

In a separate incident, three individuals have been booked for defrauding a Kalyan-based businessman of Rs 12.2 lakh. The complainant’s son had failed his Class 10 board exams, and the accused exploited the situation by falsely promising junior college admission.

To gain trust, the trio fabricated an SSC passing certificate, convincing the father of its legitimacy. They later claimed their associate had been caught with the fake document and, under the pretense of avoiding legal issues, coerced the victim into paying Rs 12.2 lakh between September and December 2024.

Realizing he had been duped, the businessman filed a complaint. A case has been registered under BNS sections 318(4) for cheating and 336(2) for forgery. Investigations are ongoing to trace all parties involved.
