The Tolichowki police have arrested Sabhia Begum, a 36-year-old domestic help, for stealing gold ornaments weighing approximately 30 tolas (around 300 grams) from her employer’s residence. The stolen jewellery is valued at nearly Rs30 lakh and was recovered intact.
On August 20, Mir Shafi Ali Khan reported that gold ornaments belonging to his mother had gone missing from their almirah at their Tolichowki home. The family discovered the theft while preparing for a function. The missing items included chains, bangles, rings, earrings, and sets studded with emeralds, pearls, and rubies.
Following an investigation, police traced the accused to Nizam Colony, Tolichowki. Some of the stolen jewellery was found with Sabhia Begum near a jewellery shop. During interrogation, she admitted to the theft, explaining that she needed money to pay off debts, including her daughter’s college fees. She also revealed that she had mortgaged part of the jewellery with a private financier and a jeweller to raise funds.
Authorities have recovered all the stolen ornaments intact, and further investigation is ongoing.
