The KUC police, in coordination with CCS police, arrested Sabbani Ranjith (24) on Friday for allegedly committing thefts from locked houses in their jurisdiction.
The police recovered gold ornaments weighing about 40 grams, valued at approximately Rs 5 lakh, along with a mobile phone and Rs 40,000, from the accused.
Central Zone DCP Dara Kavitha said Ranjith, a resident of Rechini village, Tandur mandal, Asifabad district, and currently living in Hanumakonda, was working as a construction laborer in the Tandur region. He reportedly spent his earnings on alcohol and leisure, which led him to commit thefts for easy money.
Ranjith had previously committed a theft in 2020 under the Mancherial Police limits, for which he was arrested and jailed. After his release, he had been living with his family in Venkateshwara Colony under the KUC police limits.
On December 12, Ranjith noticed that a couple in his neighborhood had left their house locked while going to a movie. He broke the lock and stole 40 grams of gold ornaments, Rs 40,000, and a mobile phone, fleeing the scene. Initially, the victims reported 250 grams of gold missing, prompting police investigation.
Acting swiftly, police conducted surveillance and detained Ranjith at KU Junction, where the stolen items were recovered. Upon interrogation, he admitted to stealing only four gold bangles, Rs 40,000, and a mobile. A recheck of the victims’ house confirmed that the remaining ornaments were intact.
The accused has been taken into custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
