Palanpur: Police in Sabarkantha district have uncovered an inter-district child trafficking racket, arresting five persons for allegedly selling a newborn baby for Rs 2 lakh.
Acting on directives from DIG Nirendrasinh Yadav and Sabarkantha SP Partharajsinh Gohil, a team from the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Himatnagar, tracked and busted the gang.
Authorities received a tip-off regarding a suspected trafficker, Malji Dabhina, in Matoda village. The police team apprehended him, and during interrogation, he allegedly confessed to selling a newborn from a family in Medi village to a buyer in Ahmedabad for Rs 2 lakh about 15 days ago. Preliminary investigations corroborated the claim.
Following this lead, the AHTU team expanded the probe and arrested four more individuals linked to the racket, bringing the total arrests to five. Police said the gang was involved in trafficking infants, indicating an organised network operating across multiple districts.
A case has been registered at Khedbrahma police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Authorities emphasised that this represents a long-running organised crime and warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found culpable, irrespective of their position.
