in a sweeping crackdown across the Trichy district, police arrested 38 individuals, including a known lottery history-sheeter, for operating an illegal lottery network. The arrests took place on Tuesday as part of a coordinated effort by the Fort Police and other district units.
The primary accused, S. Manohar (68), was arrested for defrauding J. Madhavan (38) of Rs25,000 — winnings from a lottery that Manohar himself had organized illegally. Manohar was also found peddling banned lottery tickets in Tamil Nadu, in violation of existing laws.
Police also apprehended N. Rengarajan (61), an associate of Manohar, from the Rock Fort area. Others named in the case include Kalimuthu, Baskar, and Napolean, who are now facing charges under the Lotteries (Regulation) Act.
Manohar has a prior criminal history and was detained under the Goondas Act in 2017 for similar offenses related to illegal lottery distribution.
