Russell Brand has been charged with rape and sexual assault in the U.K., according to a release from the Metropolitan Police on Friday. The 49-year-old comedian faces charges of rape, indecent assault, oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault. His first court appearance is scheduled for May 2.
The charges stem from a series of alleged incidents that occurred between the late 1990s and early 2000s, including a rape in 1999, an indecent assault in 2001, and two separate sexual assaults in 2004-2005. The investigation, which began in September 2023, was prompted by a number of allegations and growing media reports accusing Brand of inappropriate sexual behavior.
Brand has repeatedly denied the allegations and used Instagram on Friday to respond to the charges. “We’re very fortunate in a way to live in a time where there’s so little trust in the British government,” Brand said in a video statement. “We’re very fortunate, I suppose, that this is happening at a time where we know that the law has become a kind of weapon to be used against people.”
Reflecting on his past, Brand admitted to being a “fool” and described himself as a former drug and sex addict, but he strongly denied the charges of non-consensual activity. “I’ve never engaged in nonconsensual activity, I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes,” he added. Brand expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to defend himself in court.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy from the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing and encouraged anyone affected or with information to come forward. Brand’s legal battle will continue as the case moves through the courts.
