Two youths from Uttar Pradesh, identified as Rupesh Kumar and Pradeep Kumar, were remanded to three days of judicial custody by a local court in Dhalai district on Sunday. They were arrested for allegedly attempting to secure government jobs in Tripura using forged residential documents.
The duo was apprehended in Salema, Kamalpur, following a tip-off from vigilant locals who had long suspected the existence of a recruitment scam involving out-of-state candidates.
Police investigations revealed that both had cleared the SSC-GD (Staff Selection Commission – General Duty) exams by falsely claiming to be residents of Morachhara in the Kamalpur subdivision. They were intercepted while heading to collect job offer letters from the local post office.
Once detained and questioned by Kamalpur police, they confessed to fabricating addresses and documents, admitting that posing as Tripura residents gave them a better shot at qualifying for government jobs due to lower cutoff scores in the state compared to UP.
Sources indicate this is not an isolated incident. For years, candidates from Delhi, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh have reportedly secured government posts in Tripura using counterfeit documents, exploiting regional quotas.
Allegations also point to a wider fraud network, potentially involving individuals from the Assam Rifles and BSF. One name repeatedly mentioned is Umesh Chandra, a retired Assam Rifles personnel accused of helping outsiders forge Tripura identities for SSC exams.
Police are currently expanding the investigation to identify more members of the alleged syndicate and prevent further misuse of the state’s recruitment system.
