The police investigating the death of a six-month-old girl in Karukutty have arrested her maternal grandmother, Rosy, 63, of Payyappilly House, Koramana. The arrest was made on Thursday by a team led by DySP T R Rajesh and Inspector A Ramesh of Angamaly police station, following interrogation.
According to authorities, Rosy confessed to killing the infant, Delna Maria Sarah, in a fit of rage over family matters. However, she appeared disoriented and uncooperative during questioning.
Police said the grandmother slit the child’s throat with a knife, which was recovered from the scene. Rosy reportedly was undergoing psychiatric treatment, and investigators are examining the exact motive and circumstances behind the crime.
“The preliminary findings indicate this is a clear case of murder. We need additional statements and forensic evidence to establish the motive,” said an officer. Rosy is scheduled to be produced before a magistrate soon.
Delna, the daughter of Antony and Ruth, was found dead around 10 am on Wednesday after being bathed and laid beside her grandmother in the bedroom. The infant’s funeral rites were later held at St Antony’s Church in Angamaly.
