HAMILTON, ON — Two former employees of a long-term care home in Hamilton have been arrested and charged with fraud after allegedly depositing cheques belonging to elderly residents into their own personal bank accounts.
The Hamilton Police Crimes Against Seniors Unit announced the charges as part of an ongoing investigation into financial abuse targeting vulnerable seniors in care facilities.
Suspects Identified
Romeo Grospe, 44, of Hamilton, was employed as a Personal Support Worker (PSW). Police allege that between January and October 2024, he deposited multiple cheques from two residents into his own account.
Jerick David, 32, of Guelph, worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) at the same care home. In February 2025, he is accused of depositing a resident’s cheque into his personal account. The College of Nurses of Ontario has been notified of the charges.
Both men were no longer employed at the facility at the time of their arrests.
The long-term care home and families of the victims reported the incidents and have cooperated fully with investigators.
Wider Pattern of Abuse
This marks the second case in two days involving financial crimes against seniors in Hamilton. On Tuesday, police charged another care facility employee with stealing $277,000 over more than two years from assisted living residents.
Hamilton Police urge all care home operators and family members to stay alert to signs of financial exploitation.
