SCHAUMBURG, IL — Roland Schmidt, 76, of Stillman Valley, Illinois, has been charged with first-degree murder after fatally shooting Christine Moyer, 45, of Galena, Ohio, outside a Marriott hotel on Friday night.

Police report that Schmidt, the father-in-law of Moyer, followed her to the parking lot around 10:15 p.m. after a wedding event at the hotel located at 50 N. Martingale Road. Schmidt approached Moyer and shot her in the head. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Moyer was rushed to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital but later died from her injuries.

Authorities revealed that Schmidt was upset over divorce paperwork filed against his son by Moyer.

Following the incident, Schmidt was subdued by a bystander and handed over to police. He remains held at the Cook County Jail and is scheduled for a court appearance Monday. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has approved the felony charge.
