Mangaluru Rural Police have successfully arrested a chain-snatching suspect, recovering a gold mangalsutra valued at approximately Rs3.5 lakh.
The incident occurred on December 25, 2025, at around 6:30 pm, when a woman from Gurunagar, returning home with her daughter from her shop in Yeyyadi, was walking along Koppalakadu Road near Shankar Bhavan Hotel. An unidentified man approached from behind, snatched her 32-gram gold mangalsutra, and fled the scene.
A case was promptly registered at Mangaluru Rural Police Station under Crime No. 128/2025, invoking Section 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Under the supervision of Police Inspectors Gaviraj and Arun Kumar, along with the PSI and the ACP South Sub-Division’s crime team, a special investigation team was formed. Based on credible intelligence, the accused, Rohith B. Das (24), was arrested on December 28, 2025, at around 9:30 am from Kakke Padavu, Bantwal.
Police recovered the stolen mangalsutra and the electric scooter used during the crime. Investigations revealed that Rohith, employed with Swiggy and Zomato, had recently purchased the scooter and was under significant debt for personal expenses, which allegedly motivated the offence.
Rohith B. Das, son of Lakshman Das, resides at Door No. 1-13/1, Bitta Mane, behind Panchadurga High School, Kakke Padavu, Bantwal taluk, Dakshina Kannada.
Authorities also noted that in 2025, seven chain-snatching cases were reported in the Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate’s jurisdiction, all of which have been solved with arrests and recovery of stolen property.
