A sophisticated job scam involving WhatsApp, forged letters, and QR codes has led to the arrest of 35-year-old Rohit Mishra from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, by the Cyber Police Station in Shahdara, Delhi. The scam targeted Ritu Singh, who was lured by communications appearing to originate from “AIR VISTARA,” complete with the airline’s logo and a fabricated letter of intent.
Investigators confirmed that the email, messages, and documents were counterfeit, designed to extract money under the guise of job processing fees, uniforms, and other formalities. The FIR No. 104/25 was registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police traced the operation to Mishra’s residence in Aditya World City, Ghaziabad. A Redmi 10 mobile phone recovered contained key digital evidence, including the number used to communicate with the complainant. Investigators also linked the phone to an Axis Bank account used to receive the defrauded funds. Multiple QR codes and forged documents indicated a well-structured scheme blending digital convenience with document fraud.
Rohit Mishra is a repeat offender with prior cases registered at the Delhi Crime Branch, including FIR No. 185/18 and FIR No. 277/19, under sections related to cheating, forgery, criminal conspiracy, and identity misuse. Officials suggest he is part of a broader organized cyber-fraud network.
Senior police officials noted, “Techniques like brand impersonation, fake documentation, and payment funnels are modular and reused across different scams.” Such operations exploit economic uncertainty and the allure of jobs with reputed companies, particularly in aviation, technology, and government-linked sectors.
The investigation continues, with authorities analyzing seized digital evidence to trace associates and recover the cheated funds.
