Days after a 19-year-old Delhi University student was fatally hit in a hit-and-run case in Rohini, police arrested a 26-year-old man, Saurabh Gupta, and his uncle, Pankaj, for their involvement. The suspects attempted to hide their role in the accident by repairing their car.
Both suspects are residents of Sector 16 in Rohini and run a children’s play zone in Paschim Vihar, northwest Delhi.
The victim, Risal Singh, was on his way to distribute newspapers on his bicycle when the car struck him on Saturday morning. At around 6:30 AM, police were informed about the accident and found the victim’s bicycle, broken into two parts, near the red light close to the RTO office in sectors 15-16, Rohini.
While one part of the bicycle was found at the scene, the victim’s family claimed the other part was dragged away by the car. Risal lived with his family in Budh Vihar Phase II and was pursuing a BA from the School of Open Learning at Delhi University. He worked as a newspaper delivery boy to support his family, as his father had no regular income.
“Every day around 4 AM, Risal would take his bicycle to deliver newspapers,” his uncle, Mangal Singh, said.
Using CCTV footage, police identified the denim blue car involved in the crash. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini), Amit Goel, formed an investigation team that apprehended the suspects Thursday night.
The accused admitted their involvement, stating that on the day of the incident, they were returning home from Hanuman Temple in Yamuna Bazaar when they hit the deceased from behind at the T-point and fled the scene. They later repaired their vehicle in Panipat to hide the damage.
A case was registered under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
