SALYERSVILLE, Ky. — A routine patrol turned into a drug trafficking arrest when a Magoffin County sheriff’s deputy stopped to assist stranded motorists early Sunday morning.
Around 2 a.m., the deputy noticed a car pulled over on Route 114 with a woman walking around it. Upon returning to the vehicle, the deputy found two occupants: 48-year-old Roger Chaney Jr. and 50-year-old Maria Yates, both from Morehead.
While speaking to the pair, the deputy spotted a bag with an orange substance on the ground next to the car. A subsequent search uncovered a hidden compartment in the driver’s seat containing 10 to 12 grams of methamphetamine, along with various drug paraphernalia.
Chaney and Yates were arrested and charged with meth trafficking and additional related offenses. Both are currently held at the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville.
