Kasese, Uganda — Police in Kasese District have rescued an 11-month-old baby and arrested a woman suspected of child theft, sparking renewed concern over rising cases of child abductions in the region.

The suspect, Robinah Masika, 30, a resident of Base Camp Lower Cell in Central Division, Kasese Municipality, was arrested on September 27 after a joint operation by Kasese Central Police Station officers and community members.

According to authorities, Masika allegedly took the child—daughter of David Masereka—at around 1:30 p.m., seizing the baby from a housemaid without the consent of the parents. Despite resistance from the caretaker, Masika claimed she would return the child shortly, but failed to do so.

The incident was reported to the Local Council I chairperson, who promptly notified police. A coordinated search led to the suspect’s arrest and the safe recovery of the baby.

Rwenzori East Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime commended the public for their quick response and collaboration with law enforcement.

“Parents should always keep a close eye on their children, report such cases immediately to police, and ensure they have recent photos of their minors for easy identification,” Tumushime said.

He further urged the public to update emergency contacts and collaborate with local authorities to curb the growing threat of child theft.
