by Amelia Crawford

On January 26, 2025, Robert J. Buda, a 34-year-old man, was arrested in connection with a fatal fire that occurred in the Town of Wappinger. The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 6:30 p.m. reporting a structure fire at 78 Marlorville Rd. After extinguishing the flames, authorities discovered two deceased victims inside the building.

Following a thorough investigation, Buda was taken into custody and is accused of intentionally setting the fire. He faces a second-degree arson charge (a felony) and was arraigned in the Town of Wappinger Court. Buda is currently being held at the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center with bail set at $500,000 cash or $1,000,000 bond.

There is no known threat to the public at this time. Authorities are continuing their investigation, which is being supported by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office, Emergency Response Department, Fire Investigation Division, Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Hughsonville Fire Department.

The identities of the victims have not been released yet, and further information will be provided as the investigation progresses. As always, it is important to note that the charges are merely accusations, and Buda is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
