APPANOOSE COUNTY, Iowa — A Mystic man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder after a fatal shooting Tuesday night in southeast Iowa.

Just after 10:30 p.m., Appanoose County deputies responded to a home on 470th Street outside Mystic following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Randy Walker, 62, and his son Destry Walker, 36, with injuries.

Destry Walker was pronounced dead at the scene. Randy Walker was airlifted to a hospital in the Des Moines area for treatment.

As deputies investigated, they were alerted to a motorcycle crash and altercation on 176th Street, just south of Mystic. During a search of the area, law enforcement discovered Robert Barrell, 51, hiding in the weeds.

Evidence from both scenes linked Barrell to the shooting. He was taken into custody without incident and is now being held at the Appanoose County Jail.

The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are continuing to gather evidence and conduct interviews related to the case.
