A 20-year-old man, Rihan, was arrested late Sunday night in Greater Noida for allegedly strangling his 24-year-old girlfriend, Shivani, near the Jarcha canal on August 15. The tragic incident reportedly occurred over Rihan’s suspicion of Shivani’s relationship with another person.
Shivani, who lived with her family in Ghaziabad and was known by a single name, was found dead near the canal around 10 am on Saturday by local residents. Police, along with a forensic team, quickly arrived at the scene to investigate and sent her body for post-mortem examination.
The victim’s identity was confirmed through a tattoo on her hand and electronic surveillance footage. Shivani had been in a relationship with Rihan, a resident of Dadri, for approximately a year after connecting on social media. Both families were aware of their relationship, and the couple was reportedly planning to marry.
According to Central Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhir Kumar, tensions had risen due to Rihan’s suspicion that Shivani was communicating with others on social media. This led to frequent disputes. On August 15, when Shivani met Rihan, an argument escalated near the isolated Jarcha canal area, where Rihan allegedly strangled her and fled after abandoning her body.
Police apprehended Rihan near Khatana Canal late Sunday night. When officers attempted to stop him, Rihan accelerated his vehicle and fired at them. The police returned fire, injuring Rihan in his legs. He was immediately hospitalized and is under medical care.
A case under Section 103(1)(murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at Jarcha police station. The investigation is ongoing.
