KNOXVILLE, Iowa — A 49-year-old Des Moines man has been arrested for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly individual while serving as their power of attorney.

According to court documents, Richard Pace is facing a Class C felony charge of Theft Second Degree Against an Older Individual after reportedly misusing the victim’s bank account for personal expenses over a six-month period. The victim is currently a resident of Accura HealthCare of Knoxville.

Between October 11, 2024, and April 10, 2025, Pace was granted power of attorney for the elderly individual. During that time, investigators say he failed to pay for the victim’s care at the facility, leaving an unpaid balance of approximately $26,000. Pace allegedly used the victim’s account to make unauthorized purchases, cash withdrawals, and bill payments totaling about $4,000.

Pace reportedly admitted to the misuse of funds during a non-custodial interview with law enforcement. Authorities are continuing to investigate the full financial impact of the alleged exploitation.

Theft Second Degree Against an Older Individual is considered a Class C felony in Iowa, punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine.

Pace is expected to face court proceedings in the coming weeks.
