In a dramatic operation near the Kanahar river bridge, Guddu alias Zahid, a rewarded criminal, was arrested on Saturday following an encounter with a joint team of Dudhi, Myorpur, and Vindhamganj police.
Zahid was wanted for the gruesome murder of Shambhu Kharwar (42) of Bhisur village on August 7, where he brutally slit the victim’s throat. The victim’s daughter, Soni Kumari, had filed a named FIR against Zahid.
Duddhi Circle Officer Rajesh Ra said the arrest was made after receiving intelligence on criminal movements in the Jawar area. Police surrounded the area, but Zahid attempted to flee after opening fire on the approaching team near a temple. In the retaliatory firing, Zahid was shot in the left leg and taken into custody.
A country-made pistol and cartridges were recovered from him. He was later taken to Dudhi Community Health Centre for treatment.
The successful operation marked the end of a tense manhunt for Zahid, who had been on the police radar due to the brutality of the August 7 murder.
