LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Reuben D. Miller, 57, of Lexington Park, is facing criminal charges after allegedly assaulting a vulnerable adult diagnosed with autism and intellectual disabilities, according to court documents from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the ARC of Southern Maryland in Lexington Park on April 21, 2025, after staff reported visible injuries on the victim. The investigation revealed that the incident occurred the evening prior at their shared home on Columbus Drive, where Miller serves as the victim’s custodian and stepfather.

The altercation reportedly began when Miller attempted to remove headphones from the victim’s head. The situation escalated quickly, with Miller allegedly grabbing the victim by the neck, pushing him into a chair, and then punching him in the face as he fell, resulting in visible injuries. Deputies found abrasions on the victim’s nose, neck, arm, and a significant bruise on his upper back, which was caused by striking a countertop during the assault.

A witness at the scene corroborated the victim’s account, confirming that Miller initiated the confrontation.

Miller later admitted to deputies that he did push the victim into the chair but insisted that any injuries were accidental, claiming that the victim frequently struck his shoulder on nearby furniture.

Miller is facing charges of second-degree assault and vulnerable adult abuse by a custodian. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $2,500 for the assault charge, and up to 5 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $5,000 for the vulnerable adult abuse charge.

Miller’s bail hearing was held on April 22, 2025, with Judge Karen Christy Holt Chesser presiding. He is represented by the St. Mary’s County Public Defender’s Office. His trial is set for June 16, 2025, in St. Mary’s District Court.
