In a shocking development, retired Karnataka DGP and IGP OM Prakash was allegedly murdered by his wife, Pallavi, at their residence in HSR Layout, Bengaluru, on the afternoon of Sunday, April 20.
Prakash, a 1981 batch IPS officer, had served in numerous key positions throughout his decorated career, including as Director General and Inspector General of Police (DGP and IGP) in 2015, before retiring in 2017. On Sunday, he was found lying in a pool of blood at his home. Preliminary findings suggest he was stabbed to death, allegedly by Pallavi.
Police sources confirmed that Pallavi has been taken into custody for questioning, as investigators suspect her direct involvement in the crime.
Early reports indicate that the couple had been facing severe financial difficulties, and family tensions had escalated in recent times. OM Prakash had allegedly taken significant loans, and the financial stress is believed to have caused frequent domestic disputes. One possible motive being explored is a quarrel related to property matters, as he had reportedly transferred assets directly to his son, bypassing Pallavi—though these details are yet to be officially confirmed.
OM Prakash, originally from Champaran district, Bihar, had an illustrious career after joining the IPS. He began his service as ASP of Harapanahalli, and later served as SP in Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru. He held significant roles including SP of Karnataka Vigilance Cell, DIG of Fire Services, and IGP of CID, and played a prominent role during the 1993 Bhatkal communal riots.
He served in several senior positions, including DIG (Administration), DIG (Training), ADGP (Crime and Technical Services), and ADGP (Grievances and Human Rights). He assumed office as DGP and IGP of Karnataka on February 28, 2015, and retired in 2017.
Police are continuing their investigation and have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the exact motive behind the killing.
