Miguel Ferrer, a retired fire captain from Davie, Florida, has been arrested on charges of insurance fraud and criminal use of personal identification information. According to state authorities, Ferrer, 49, submitted false claims for a resort stay in connection with a 2022 water damage incident at his home.
Ferrer had originally filed a claim under his homeowners insurance policy with Citizens Property Insurance Corporation in March 2022, alleging water intrusion caused by a clogged air conditioning drain line. Following the damage, Ferrer vacated his home to begin repairs and stayed at a resort in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. However, investigators say he submitted falsified invoices for an additional 26 nights at the resort.
The investigation revealed that Ferrer was actually in Ocala, where he was serving as an instructor at the Fire Academy on several dates when he claimed to be at the resort. His Sun Pass transponder data also showed he had traveled south from Ocala to Broward County, contradicting his claims of being at the resort.
Ferrer was arrested and booked into jail. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison. Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis condemned the act, stating, “It’s particularly sad when those arrested for insurance fraud are former first responders,” adding that such cases demonstrate the serious consequences of fraud and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
