In a startling case of serial marriage fraud, the Kerala Police have arrested a woman, Reshma, from Ernakulam, who allegedly deceived at least seven men across different districts in the state by posing as a bride-to-be.
Reshma, a mother of a two-year-old child, was arrested on June 6, just moments before another planned wedding. Her latest victim, a local panchayat member, discovered marriage documents from another ceremony, held only 45 days earlier, in her bag — leading him to alert the authorities.
According to police, Reshma had been placing online matrimonial ads and posing as a bride through misleading phone conversations. In this latest case, her supposed mother contacted the man after he shared his contact on a matrimonial group. After meeting in person and getting engaged, she convinced him that her family opposed the union, citing a tragic backstory of being adopted and abused.
The elaborate deception unraveled when the groom discovered her previous marriage certificate. Police arrived at the wedding venue and arrested Reshma just before the ceremony.
Authorities are now investigating how many men she has targeted in similar schemes and whether her motive was financial or otherwise. Police suspect that she may have orchestrated multiple fraudulent marriages over the years under false pretenses.
