BISMARCK, N.D. (North Dakota Monitor) — Former North Dakota State Senator Ray Holmberg, convicted of a child sex crime, is scheduled for sentencing on March 26, 2025.
Holmberg, who was once a powerful figure in the state’s legislature, pleaded guilty in August to traveling abroad with the intent to engage in sexual activities with minors under 18.
The sentencing hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. before U.S. District Court Judge Dan Hovland in Fargo. Holmberg has been in custody since November, after Judge Hovland revoked his pre-sentence release.
Holmberg faces up to 30 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a lifetime of supervised release. Under his plea agreement, prosecutors will seek a sentence at the lower end of the federal sentencing guidelines, which suggest a sentence of three to four years in prison, subject to the court’s discretion.
Holmberg resigned from his position as a North Dakota state senator in 2022 after federal investigators conducted a search of his home in late 2021.
The case has drawn significant attention due to Holmberg’s position as a former state lawmaker and the gravity of the charges.
