by Ananya Mehta

Police revealed that cybercriminals allegedly swindled a retired banker and his wife of Rs 50.5 lakh by impersonating police officers. The scammers maintained a three-day video call with the couple, claiming to conduct a high-profile investigation.

The accused, identified as Ravi Ananda Ambore and Vishwapal Chandrakant Jadhav, were apprehended after authorities traced the fraudulent transactions through their bank accounts. The scam came to light on October 10 when the victims realized the deception and approached the police.

The conmen impersonated an IPS officer, convincing the couple they were under surveillance. Using a fabricated FIR and other fake documents, they persuaded the retired banker to transfer large sums of money. Investigators described the arrests as a “digital arrest,” highlighting the role of online banking and video calls in the fraud.

Police are continuing their probe into the money laundering aspects of the scheme and warning citizens to be cautious of such impersonation scams.
