Agartala, Tripura – In a major breakthrough, Tripura Police have arrested Ramayani Shrimayi, a cashier at a local branch of UCO Bank, in connection with the Rs16.38 crore Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) bank scam.
The scam, which came to light in early September, involved the forgery of cheques using the signature of AMC Commissioner D.K. Chakma. The fraudsters siphoned off public funds from the AMC’s account between August 25 and September 2, sparking widespread outrage and political uproar.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, led by Addl. SP Dhruva Nath
The arrested individual, Ramayani Shrimayi, is a resident of Nowgaon district, Assam, and worked as a cashier at the implicated UCO Bank branch.
Though police have not disclosed her full role, sources indicate she provided technical support to the fraudsters, facilitating the execution of forged cheque transactions.
UCO Bank has reimbursed the full Rs16.38 crore to AMC’s account following a request by Mayor Dipak Majumder
The bank is said to be cooperating fully with investigators
The Tripura Government formed the SIT just a day before the first recovery, showing the urgency behind the probe
The case has triggered political controversy, with the Opposition alleging deeper financial irregularities tied to AMC’s smart city project funds.
AMC officials, however, have denied any wrongdoing, claiming that all project funds are regularly audited and open for review.
The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days.
