In a major breakthrough, the Bareilly police have arrested Rajan Verma, a man who had been posing as a police officer and exploiting female officers across several districts. Verma, who hails from Midhniya Garhi village in Lakhimpur Kheri, had been using a false identity to target and extort money from his victims.
Rajan Verma, the son of Virendra Pal Verma, had been preying on female police officers, particularly those with the surname “Verma,” making it easier to gain their trust. By presenting himself as a serving police officer, he built relationships with several female officers, including one whom he promised marriage.
He is accused of deceiving at least five female officers, including a police officer stationed in Bareilly, whom he allegedly defrauded of Rs3 million.
Verma was arrested by the Kotwali Police near the Satellite Bus Station in Bareilly after being on the run for some time. The arrest was made following a complaint filed by a female police officer in Bareilly on July 13, who reported that she had been deceived by Verma.
According to SP City Rahul Bhati, Verma has multiple cases registered against him in Moradabad, Lakhimpur Kheri, Shravasti, and Bareilly. In his confession, Verma admitted to committing fraud in 8-10 similar incidents. The accused had been exploiting official police websites to access personal data of his victims, further enabling his fraudulent activities.
