Madhubani police apprehended Raj Kumar Das on Wednesday night in connection with the murder of Baba Ram Das Mehta, the head priest at Baba Mastram Kuti, located in the Saharghat police station area. The arrest was made within 48 hours of the crime, restoring public confidence shaken by the brutal killing.
The victim was found dead under gruesome circumstances on Monday night. Saharghat SHO Arvind Kumar revealed that during interrogation, Raj Kumar confessed to harboring suspicions about his wife’s frequent visits to the Mahanth for religious rituals and worship. Convinced that the priest’s spiritual influence was affecting his wife, Raj Kumar attacked the priest with a brick while he was asleep in the hermitage (kuti), and subsequently strangled him to death.
Police were informed of the murder on the morning of June 10. A forensic team visited the scene and collected crucial evidence, including blood-stained bricks, a mattress, and other items that played a key role in the investigation.
